High Bright Edge lit or Backlight LED Lighting- high brightness for sunlight readable LCDs
For over fifteen years, GDS has been supplying high bright backlighting units. Custom engineered backlights, with brightness beyond 2,000 nits have been developed to meet the exact specifications of our customers. These backlight units include both CCFL based backlights to the newer LED backlights. These backlights units have been developed as a system-level approach, providing power, controls and thermal management as key elements of the design. These backlight units have been in full 24/7 operation for years. GDS backlight and edge-light units have been added to displays up 65" diagonal.
LCD displays were developed for indoor use but are increasingly popular for outdoor and high ambient light conditions. Even with advanced optical enhancements, such as GDS' optical bond technology, display still need to have additional brightness to achieve the performance level of many applications. The key to display viewability in high ambient light conditions are two-fold. First, the display must exhibit an acceptable level of contrast. The main point in contrast enhancement is to have a contrast ratio of no less than 3:1 and it is preferred to have ratios beyond 10:1. Correcting reflective loss is often times not enough. Increasing the display's brightness coupled with index-matching contrast improvement through optical bonding is required. Second, there is a phenomena called "matching the surround brightness". In this case, the display's internal brightness must be increased to match a surrounding brightness. A display may measure an acceptable brightness and contrast ratio, but if placed against a bright reflecting surface such as a white wall, the surrounding brightness may cause the viewer's eye to correct for it, making the display seem to be insufficiently bright. Matching the surround brightness will make a display have the "WOW" factor.
Backlight systems can be modified two different ways; either a true backlight system can be added to the rear of a display or the edge-light of the standard display can be replaced with high brightness LED rails instead of CCFLs or standard LED. Backlight systems tend to offer much greater brightness but also adds thickness and complexity to the display. Edge-light replacements can fit within the OEM display package but tend to be limited in the amount of light output. Additionally, adding LED rails are more challenging in thermal management.
